There are the 6 levels of autonomous vehicles, as defined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE):

Level 0: No automation

Level 1: Driver assistance

The vehicle has one or more automated driving features, such as adaptive cruise control or lane departure warning. However, the human driver is still responsible for the overall operation of the vehicle.

Level 2: Partial automation

The vehicle can control both steering and acceleration/ deceleration in certain driving conditions, but the human driver must still be ready to take over at any time. For example, a Level 2 vehicle might be able to drive itself on a highway, but the human driver will need to take over if the vehicle encounters an obstacle or if the driver wants to change lanes.

Level 3: Conditional automation

The vehicle can control all aspects of driving in certain driving conditions, but the human driver must be ready to take over if the vehicle encounters a situation that it cannot handle. For example, a Level 3 vehicle might be able to drive itself in stop-and-go traffic, but the human driver will need to take over if the vehicle encounters an accident or if there is a construction zone.

Level 4: High automation

The vehicle can control all aspects of driving in most driving conditions, but the human driver must be present in the car and ready to take over if necessary. For example, a Level 4 vehicle might be able to drive itself from home to work, but the human driver will need to take over if the vehicle encounters a situation that it cannot handle, such as bad weather or a traffic jam.

Level 5: Full automation

The vehicle can control all aspects of driving in all driving conditions, and the human driver is not required to be present in the car. Level 5 autonomous vehicles are not yet commercially available, but they are the ultimate goal of the automotive industry.
